My grandfather, Baron Nikolai van der Howen (1860 - 1933), was born and lived in St. Petersberg, but from a family that came from Courlandia. He was in the Tsarist army but travelled widely in the world, including Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion, negotiating on the Russian side after the Russo-Japanese war of 1905 and visiting England and elsewhere. He fled the Russian Revolution and eventually settled in Nice, France. He married twice, no children by first marriage. His second wife, Dora Sneer (I seem to remember) bore him one daughter, my mother, Marianne. She married my father, a pole. We use an Anglicised version of her maiden name. I know I have a relative with the name Howen in Munich, Germany. I do have a family tree going back a few hundred years, from a german-language genealogy book, but I have not looked at it for a while so would have to refresh my memory about details. There is another line that comes down from Nikolai's sister - they also lived in France and continue to do so in Lyon. Let me know if any of this rings any bell.
